This excellent ambient ep, released last week on Ghostly International, does exactly what it says on the tin – it features timeless compositions, with some futuristic soundscapes, adding a very contemporary feel to the 6-tracker, which is now available on iTunes and Amazon.
This is the duo’s second collaboration, after 2008′s critically acclaimed Ocean Fire, and it contains only instrumental tracks, which are built around some piano pieces which Sakamoto sent to Willits subsequent to that 2008 release.
As a duo, this will only enhance the reputation of these amazing artists, but they don’t really need all that. Ryuichi Sakamoto was a founding member of the Yellow Magic Orchestra – pioneers of electronica – and for his film soundtracks, he has won an Academy Award (The Last Emperor), two Golden Globes, a Grammy and a BAFTA. San Francisco-based Christopher Willits has an amazing catalogue of about 20 electronic music releases, and is also thought of as a pioneer, due to the way he experiments with not just sound, but by adding visual artforms too, or by experimenting in the visual arts within their own domain.
This album is an intelligent journey through an emotional rollercoaster of sound, with the piano forming the foundations, and with plenty of pads breathing those piano notes along. The label website notes that the tracks on this album… “speak about the very essence of what it means to be human”, and this seems quite apt. There is a sense of life encapsulated, stripped down to it’s barest form, along with a sense of sadness for doing so. But that’s only my take on it, I’m pretty sure that this ep will exude different things, to every single listener. Here is a taste, one full free track to download from the 6 track release.
